Your First Year of Trading Is Probably a Donation
I lost about $8,000 in my first year of trading. At the time I thought I was learning. Looking back, I was just funding someone else’s returns.
That’s the part nobody tells you. When you’re new and you lose, the money doesn’t vanish. It moves. It goes to the person on the other side of your trade — usually someone with more experience, better tools, or a system that doesn’t panic when you do.
Here’s the number that should stop you cold. A study out of Brazil tracked 19,646 people who day traded for more than 300 days. 97% of them lost money. Only 1.1% earned more than the Brazilian minimum wage. And the researchers found something worse: no evidence that anyone got better with practice.
Think about what that means. Your first year isn’t tuition in the sense of “pay now, earn later.” For almost everyone, it’s a transfer....
