You Can Extract 3D Data from a Photo Taken on a Camera With No Lens
Jon Bumstead, AKA “okooptics,” does really fascinating work with unintuitive optics and imaging. He tends to focus on reconstructed imagery captured with non-standard cameras and sensors, such as taking a 2D image using a “single pixel” camera. Most recently, he managed to generate 3D data using a camera without a lens.
If you were to remove the lens from your interchangeable lens digital camera (a DSLR or mirrorless, it doesn’t matter) and snap a photo, the resulting image would be almost complete garbage. At best, you’ll see some vague and very blurry shapes if they’re large enough and have enough variation in contrast or color.
