Why Dynatrace says AI changes what your logs are for
Mala Pillutla has a plain test for whether observability is doing its job: when something breaks, can you find out why. For most of the history of log management, that meant a person reading log lines and reconstructing the story by hand. As Pillutla puts it:
When there is an incident, the why of what happened is always in that log line. It was a manual process of stitching them together to understand what happened, why it happened, and importantly how to fix it.
That manual habit coped while systems sat still long enough to be read. They don't anymore. Pillutla, Dynatrace's Global Vice President for Observability and Security, points to what containers did to that assumption, and what AI is now doing on top of it – the shift she calls the move from a software development life cycle (SDLC) to an AI development life cycle (AIDLC):
