Why can’t we give up on social media when we know it’s bad for our health? Because we’re addicted, admit US users

While successive governments around the world preen and posture about various shades of social media bans in their jurisdiction, what if we all effectively banned ourselves for the simple reason that our addiction to the platforms is making us unwell?

That’s an intriguing, if unlikely, possibility to consider on the back of a survey of 1,000 US adults which reveals that the way Americans engage with social media is changing due to a bad case of digital burnout. The study from Incogni - The Great Digital Fatigue: How Digital Burnout Is Changing Social Media Use - finds that:

  • 55% of Americans post less than they did five years ago.
  • 53% have become more selective about who can see what they share.
  • 51% say maintaining an online presence feels like work.
  • 47% have deleted a social media or messaging app because it caused stress or anxiety.
