Why automotive retail needs an AI-Native operating layer

India’s used-car business is no longer a side trade. It is becoming a serious retail industry, with 5.9 million transactions in FY2024-25, headed toward 9.5 million by 2030. But alongside this growth is a more fundamental concern: the way many dealerships run their businesses today, through spreadsheets, WhatsApp and individual memory, will not hold at twice the scale.
That concern is justified.
For most independent dealers in India, there is no formal tech stack to speak of. A car’s status may live in someone’s head. A customer’s enquiry may remain buried in a WhatsApp thread. Pricing decisions may sit in a spreadsheet or depend on a manager’s gut feel built over years on the lot. This works at a level when you are selling ten cars a month. It almost starts breaking the moment it starts touching fifty.
