Every agency has lived this version of the story. A client signs a retainer to "fix growth." The engagement starts strong — quick wins, cleaner funnels, better creative. Then the curve flattens again. The client asks the question that ends many relationships: why isn't this working?
The honest answer is usually not about the work. It is that the stall the client described was never a problem the retainer could solve — because the break was in a different layer than the one being repaired.
After months of reading public postmortems of stalled products — twenty so far, classified by where the break actually happened — I have stopped treating "stalled growth" as a single condition. It is at least six, and each one asks for different work from an agency.
