WhatsApp Tests Third-Party AI Agents on Android Beta
Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly testing a dedicated framework on Android that allows users to connect third-party AI assistants and automated agents directly within the messaging app.
According to details spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, the feature aims to expand the platform’s conversational AI capabilities beyond Meta’s in-house AI assistant, offering users greater flexibility to integrate external specialized AI tools.
A Dedicated Space for External AI Assistants
The new feature introduces a dedicated “Agents” tab within WhatsApp settings on Android. Through this section, users can configure, manage, and link up to five external AI assistants to their accounts.
Setup involves linking third-party AI services via custom API keys generated by the respective service providers. Once connected, users can personalize these external agents by assigning custom display names and profiles for easy identification within their chat feeds.
