WhatsApp Boss Scam Alert: I4C Warns Corporate Professionals
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has issued a fresh advisory warning businesses, Chartered Accountants, Chief Financial Officers (CFOs), and corporate personnel against a rising, high-value cyber fraud known as the “Boss Scam.”
The threat relies on account takeovers driven by malicious attachments and CEO impersonation tactics to trick finance teams into executing fraudulent money transfers.
How the WhatsApp Account Hijack and Scam Work
According to technical analysis by the National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit (NCTAU), the fraud unfolds in a multi-stage process:
- Malicious Initial Contact: Cybercriminals send compressed files—such as Statement of Account.zip, RBI.zip, or MCA.zip—via WhatsApp, SMS, or deceptive emails impersonating official regulatory bodies like the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Income Tax Department, or the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).
