What "the Same Session" Means When the Transport Is Replaceable

A connection drops and comes back. The dashboard goes green. What actually recovered?

There are two answers, and they are not the same claim. Either the original transport survived an interruption, or something built a replacement, and the replacement is now doing the work. In most systems, the observable end state — connected, healthy, serving — is identical either way. The paths that produced it are not.

This gets more pressing the more disposable your connections are, and modern designs make them very disposable. Peer connections get rebuilt. Pooled database handles get discarded wholesale. Consumers get their partitions reassigned. Leases expire and get reacquired by a different process. Treating the transport as inventory is the right call — it is what makes recovery cheap. But it opens a gap: if the thing carrying the session can be swapped at any moment, then the session is not the connection, and something...
