An AI assistant that checks your bank balance, searches the latest news or schedules a meeting is doing more than generating text. It’s using tools to interact with other systems.

Tool calling allows AI models to request information or actions from external software, including databases, applications, calculators and APIs. Rather than relying only on their training data, models can use these connections to retrieve current information and perform tasks.

For businesses, that opens the door to AI assistants that do more than answer questions. But it also raises an important challenge: deciding which systems an AI model can access and what actions it should be allowed to take.
