What did a “Smart Classroom” mean 10 years ago and what does it mean today?

Ten years ago, if you walked into a classroom equipped with a projector, an interactive whiteboard, a computer and perhaps a document camera, you would probably have called it a “smart classroom” or “Digital Classroom”.
At that time, the transformation was largely about digitising the teaching environment. Chalkboards were gradually being complemented by digital displays. Teachers started using PowerPoint presentations, videos and multimedia content. Projectors brought the internet and digital resources into classrooms, while interactive whiteboards introduced a new way of engaging with content.
For its time, this was a significant leap forward. But technology and more importantly, the expectations of teachers and students has evolved dramatically.
Today, simply putting a large display in a classroom does not make the classroom “smart.”
