West Bengal Launches Quantum and Semiconductor Hub in Kolkata

West Bengal Information Technology and Electronics Minister Kalyan Chakraborti has launched an Emerging Quantum and Semiconductor Technologies (EQST) section at the CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR-CGCRI) in Kolkata. Unveiled during the national conference on Quantum and Semiconductor Technologies (CQST-2026), the new research unit acts as a focused institutional anchor to accelerate deep-tech innovation and establish the state as a major destination for next-generation technology investments.

The newly inaugurated EQST facility will build on CSIR-CGCRI’s technical capabilities in specialized glass, optical fiber, ceramics, and advanced photonics. Key research verticals will target two-dimensional quantum materials, advanced photonics for quantum devices, single-electron transistors, and superconducting quantum platforms. The state government plans to integrate this specialized wing with the thematic hubs of the National Quantum Mission while connecting research efforts with premier academic centers including IIT Kharagpur, IIEST Shibpur, Indian Statistical Institute, and NIT Durgapur.
