Watti Is a Futuristic Desk Lamp with Personality

A normal desk lamp is about as simple as appliances get. You turn it on, point it where you need light, and otherwise forget that it exists. Developer Nikolay Tyulkin is working on something much more interesting with Watti, a robotic desk lamp that can move, see its surroundings, and eventually figure out where you need light without being told.

Watti is still a work in progress, but many of the features have already taken shape. The current prototype has five motorized axes, a ring of 45 individually addressable WS2812 RGB LEDs, and an Orbbec Astra Mini S RGB-D camera. A Raspberry Pi 5 running ROS 2 ties everything together.

Those five axes allow the base, shoulder, elbow, neck, and head to move independently, giving Watti a range of motion similar to a traditional articulated desk lamp. Five RobStride motors provide that movement and report their positions back to the...
