The rapid democratization of application development over the last decade and a half — through trends such as cloud and low code — has made enterprise IT landscapes ever harder to understand, let alone control.
And the addition of AI to this already volatile mix threatens to overwhelm already harried CIOs by enabling almost anyone to build applications and automate work without any specialist support at all — leaving organizations unable to see, understand or validate the systems that increasingly constitute their operating models.
Or at least unable to do so fast enough to matter.
Which is why operating model transformation has become, for me, the most fascinating part of the AI debate. Because building an organization capable of exploiting these new capabilities without losing coherence in the process may be the defining organizational challenge of this new technological wave.
