Volkswagen Group partners with NXP to standardise semiconductor technology for future vehicles
Volkswagen Group has entered into a strategic partnership with NXP Semiconductors to develop a common semiconductor foundation for its future software-defined vehicles (SDVs), with NXP’s S32K5 family of microcontrollers (MCUs) set to support zonal vehicle architecture across the Group’s brands and vehicle segments.
Announced ahead of the International Suppliers Fair (IZB) in Wolfsburg, Germany, the partnership aims to reduce electronic hardware complexity, improve scalability and support the deployment of digital features across future vehicle platforms. The first vehicle featuring the new architecture is planned for 2027.
The collaboration forms part of Volkswagen Group’s broader semiconductor strategy, which involves establishing long-term relationships with chipmakers to strengthen supply resilience, align technology development with automotive requirements and improve planning certainty.
Zonal architecture to simplify vehicle electronics
As vehicles incorporate more digital functions, managing them through numerous separate electronic control units (ECUs) can increase development complexity, complicate parts management and limit scalability. Zonal architecture...
