VolAnti Uses Sound to Spot Invisible Fiber-Optic Drones
One of the biggest advantages of fiber-optic FPV drones is that they are invisible to traditional RF detection systems. Because they send video and control signals through a thin strand of optical fiber instead of over the air, there are no radio transmissions for conventional drone detectors to find. That doesn't mean they're completely silent, though. The one thing they can't hide is the sound of their propellers, and that's exactly what Agam Rossen's open source VolAnti project is designed to detect.
VolAnti is built around an ESP32-S3 housed in a 91 mm enclosure with four ICS-43434 MEMS microphones positioned around the PCB. The microphones all share the same I2S clock so their samples stay synchronized, and instead of trying to determine the drone's direction, the system simply sums all four signals together. Rossen found that beamforming offered little benefit because the microphones are much closer together than the wavelengths...
