Valve Publishes Steam Controller's 3D CAD Files So Tinkerers Can Create Their Own Accessories

Valve's new Steam Controller may still be out of stock, but it's not 100% untouchable. On Wednesday, the company released the official CAD files for the accessory and its wireless Puck.

The company publishes its 3D models in STP and STL formats, along with engineering drawings that mark keep‑out zones around antennas, connectors, and other sensitive areas. These files focus on the outer shell rather than the internal parts, allowing users to design components that fit around the existing hardware.

The files also sit under a Creative Commons BY‑NC‑SA license, which lets people download, modify, and share the designs for non‑commercial use as long as they credit Valve and share by-products under the same terms. Selling accessories based on these files requires advanced permission from Valve itself, per Tom's Hardware. Damage caused by third-party accessories based on CAD files will void the Steam Controller and Puck standard warranties.
