Upcoming Windows 11 Default Setting May Slow Games by up to 15%
Through its October 13 quality update, Microsoft will enable Memory Integrity by default on Windows 11 PCs. The security setting, which has been optional up until now, could reduce gaming performance depending on your machine and your preferred titles.
But what is Memory Integrity, and what's it got to do with gaming? Also called Hypervisor-Protected Code Integrity (HVCI), Memory Integrity checks kernel-mode code and drivers before Windows loads them. It uses Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) to isolate those checks from the main OS. Microsoft says this helps stop malicious or untrusted code, including rootkits, from reaching the Windows kernel.
This could cause games to lag on older PCs. Tests performed by Tom's Hardware back in 2021 found that HVCI combined with VBS can reduce gaming performance by up to 15%.
