Turn a Raspberry Pi Into a Portable Commodore 64
To this day, the Commodore 64 (C64) remains the best-selling single computer model of all time — and it has never really gone away entirely. More than four decades after its release, enthusiasts are still finding new ways to carry this computer into the modern era. The latest example comes in the form of a DIY handheld created by YouTuber Retro Dad, which packs a complete C64 experience into a portable enclosure.
Built around a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, the project combines a physical keyboard, dedicated gaming controls, and authentic Commodore joystick ports, creating a system that can be pulled out anywhere to enjoy classic games. Better still, the entire project is open source, with printable case files, custom firmware, wiring diagrams, and a detailed build guide available for anyone who wants to make one of their own.
