TRAI Plans Single Password Public Wi-Fi Access Across India

India may soon witness a major digital connectivity upgrade as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) explores a nationwide public Wi-Fi system that could allow users to access over four lakh hotspots using a single login and password. The initiative is part of the government-backed PM-WANI scheme aimed at improving affordable internet access across the country.

TRAI has invited stakeholder feedback on expanding public Wi-Fi infrastructure and improving user adoption. The regulator is also studying successful global public Wi-Fi models from countries such as South Korea, Singapore, and the UK to strengthen India’s digital ecosystem.

According to government data, India already has more than 4 lakh PM-WANI hotspots operational, serving millions of users nationwide. The proposed system aims to make internet access seamless by reducing repeated login requirements and enabling users to connect easily at railway stations, markets, public spaces, and rural areas.
