TRAI Orders Telecom Operators to Highlight Mandatory Recharge Plans

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a directive ordering major telecom operators—including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea—to make statutory recharge options significantly easier to find on their digital platforms and physical sales points.

The regulatory intervention comes in response to numerous subscriber complaints alleging poor transparency. An investigation by TRAI confirmed that operators frequently buried required plans under obscure submenus or forced consumers to navigate through multiple screens to locate them. This design pattern created friction for budget-conscious users, feature-phone owners, and rural subscribers seeking low-cost or voice-only options without unwanted data bundles.

Under the new order, all telecom service providers must create a dedicated section titled “TRAI-Mandated Packs”.
