Track Storms at a Glance with the Pi Rain Radar Project
Weather dashboards tend to pack as much information onto the screen as possible. Forecasts, temperatures, humidity, wind, air quality, and graphs all compete for space. Alex Soul's Pi Rain Radar takes the opposite approach. This Raspberry Pi-powered display is mostly interested in one thing: showing where it has been raining and which direction that rain appears to be moving.
Soul originally built the project for his own house, where Home Assistant and a Tempest Weather Station already handle the usual weather data. Rather than duplicate all of that information, Pi Rain Radar displays up to two hours of recent radar imagery as an animation. A quick look at the screen can give you a good idea of whether that patch of rain is moving toward you or heading somewhere else.
The application runs on a Raspberry Pi 4 (although other models should work as well) using Docker, with ready-made ARM64...
