Tokenmaxxing became established as a trend when Jensen Huang, co-founder, president and CEO of NVIDIA, suggested software engineers should burn massive amounts of AI token value relative to their salary to prove their worth.
Meanwhile tech companies, such as Meta and Amazon, tracked employee AI usage on internal dashboards that ranked workers by how many billions of tokens they burned. As a result, employees competing for titles like "Token Legend" or "Session Immortal" began using longer prompts, parallel agent loops, and heavy context windows to climb these internal rankings. This perverse incentive encouraged staff to run wasteful background tasks, keep redundant AI chat sessions alive, or use expensive models unnecessarily just to inflate their activity score.
