Token gesture - how enterprises are waking up to the cost of 'free for all' AI. Spend, spend, spend is no longer going to cut it
From the introduction of steam engines through to today, Jevons Paradox reminds us that increased efficiency leads to more people using a particular tool or technology. Today the paradox is in full play with as decreasing token costs pairs with increased usage of AI in general - and that’s causing many to stop and think again about how they’re budgeting for AI.
There have been plenty examples of late of organizations which have been at the forefront of AI experimentation and deployment suddenly getting an unwelcome reality check when the bill came in. Just this week it’s been reported that US supermarket giant Walmart is capping staff usage of an AI agent called Code Puppy, used to help with spreadsheets and presentations. Workers who previously had unlimited access to tokens now have a set allocation.
That way, presumably, Walmart hopes to keep on top of the AI meter running out...
