This Was the Roughest May PlayStation Hardware Has Had Since 2000

Last month's US PlayStation sales were the worst they've been in any May since 2000. Compared with May 2025, unit sales in May 2026 were a whole 58% lower, while Xbox unit sales "only" dropped 12%.

Despite the drop in sales of these pretty famous gaming consoles, total US spending on gaming hardware in May 2026 rose around 38% year-on-year to roughly $249 million. This came mostly from Nintendo's Switch 2, which was the top-selling console in both the US and Europe last month, per Games Industry.

Rising prices are thought to have played a major role in the PlayStation downturn. Sony raised PS5 prices in August 2025 and again in March 2026, pushing the average amount that US players paid for a PS5 to about $672 in May (a nearly 33% year-over-year increase).
