This Solar-Powered System Brings Lead-Acid Batteries Back to Life

Off-grid power systems are becoming increasingly practical and affordable, with both wind turbines and solar panels dropping in price pretty dramatically over the past decade. But for those to be viable, you need a way to store energy and lead-acid batteries are still the most economical option at homestead scales. The only problem is that lead-acid batteries sulfate and degrade. That’s why Thelastjack131 designed this solar-powered system for reviving lead-acid batteries with sulfation.

Sulfation is a direct consequence of the lead-acid battery chemistry. Crystals made of lead sulfate build up on the lead plates in the battery and when a thick enough layer of crystals build up (usually due to sitting unused at low charge for a while), they prevent acid contact and the battery performance quickly degrades until it is unusable.
