This Smart Picture Frame Shows You Which Birds Are Outside
Birdwatching is a very relaxing hobby, but actually identifying the birds visiting your backyard takes a bit of knowledge. Apps can help with that, and projects based on BirdNET can automatically identify birds by their calls. But Arne Giacomo Munthe-Kaas wanted something that was a little nicer to look at than a list of species on a screen. His Fugleramme project turns those detections into a constantly changing piece of natural-history artwork.
Fugleramme is an E Ink picture frame that displays illustrations of birds recently heard outside. Munthe-Kaas has the system running in his home in Bergen, Norway, where it has accumulated around 2,600 detections spanning 37 species.
If you’d like to build your own, the recommended hardware consists of a Raspberry Pi 5 with 2 GB of RAM, a Pimoroni Inky Impression 13.3-inch Spectra 6 E Ink display, and a USB microphone. Munthe-Kaas uses a Boya BY-M3 lavalier microphone...
