This Redditor Built Their Own Colorimeter
Color is weird. On the one hand, it is very objective — hue is just the wavelength of light. On the other hand, the way we see and perceive color is very complicated and subjective. For instance, did you know that brown is just orange at low brightness? Then there are the differences in how something like an LCD screen produces color, compared to printed pigments and physical materials. To make sense of it all, Redditor North-Spread4675 built their own colorimeter.
A colorimeter is a measurement device that tries to objectively match the subjective human perception of color. It isn’t simply telling you the wavelength(s) present in a sample, but rather the levels through three filters that approximate the stimuli that reach the three cones of the human eye.
