This PCB Business Card Uses NFC Power to Animate 21 LEDs

Sometimes the best projects get started as a learning experience. That’s what happened with Wilson Harper, who wanted to learn KiCad. He picked what seemed like a relatively simple first project: designing a PCB business card. Three months later, that card had turned into a lesson in NFC energy harvesting, RF antenna design, Charlieplexing, power management, and bare-metal microcontroller programming.

The finished PCB business card has no battery, but tapping it against a smartphone provides enough power to run an ATtiny816 microcontroller and animate 21 LEDs. It also works as a conventional NFC business card, allowing a phone to pull up Harper’s contact information.

Smartphone NFC readers generate a small magnetic field that induces current in the card’s antenna. Ordinary NFC tags use this harvested energy to power the circuitry needed to communicate with the phone, but some NFC chips can also make excess energy available to external hardware. Harper...
