In a recent interview with a tech exec (not from PwC I hasten to add) I was (I felt) somewhat flippantly told that 2027 will be the year of the employee bloodbath because of enterprise AI deployment.

At the same time evangelists of agentic AI will tell you it will empower employees by freeing them to do more meaningful work. How do we master this contradiction?

Well, PwC’s 2026 Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey, is a fine starting point. It is based on interviews with nearly 50,000 workers across 48 countries and regions, and finds diverging optimism in the growth trajectories and experiences of employees.

This survey, in combination with PwC’s 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, sheds some light on the fault lines developing in the jobs market that suggest many workers may indeed be facing job losses because of agentic AI.
