This “Infinite Range” RC Car Explores the World
The “RC” in “RC car” stands for “radio control.” But everyone using the term is usually talking about direct radio control: the driver has a transmitter that sends radio commands directly to a receiver on the vehicle. But that isn’t a technological limitation these days. To prove it, Preston used an “infinite range” RC car to explore the world (or at least New York City).
Preston didn’t build the robot in question. It is an EarthRover Zero from FrodoBots, which costs $399 and is pretty interesting. It is a kind of four-wheeled telepresence robot, with a built-in camera, microphone, and speaker. It seems to be intended as an off-the-shelf solution for tasks like food delivery, like a low-cost alternative to those Serve robots with the goofy eyes that you see driving around LA.
