This Homebrew Apple II Is Even Better Than It Looks
Retrocomputing is a fantastic hobby for learning about the history of computing and for gaining a better understanding of the fundamentals that modern computers still rely on. I’m particularly fond of the Apple II series, because it was foundational to the industry and because my family’s first computer was an Apple IIc. But finding a good original Apple II and maintaining it isn’t easy. Simon Boak’s SB Mini II is a homebrew Apple II that is the perfect usable alternative to the real thing.
This project is interesting, because it is a clone of the Apple II in the actual historical sense — sort of. The Apple II contained off-the-shelf components and others were able to build clones back when it was still on sale.
