This “Flip-Squisk” Display Is Nothing Like a Flip-Disc Display

We’ve seen a lot of DIY flip-disc displays in recent years and they’re all very cool, but virtually all of them operate in the same way as the traditional flip-disc displays of yore — though some do incorporate improvements made possible by modern technology. Zimm’s P.A.R. (Pixel Art Robot) “flip-squisk” display is different, because it operates in a way that is unlike every other flip-disc display.

Almost all flip-disc displays rely on small permanent magnets and solenoids to flip. One side of the disc is light and one side is dark, so you just want to control which side is visible at any given time. By energizing the solenoid behind the disc with one polarity or the other, you attract or repulse the permanent magnet and cause the disc to flip to one position or the other.
