This 4K bird feeder camera nails focus, but its video frame rates let it down

The Kiwibit Bird Feeder 2 Pro is a well-built, easy-to-live-with smart feeder that keeps itself charged and produces nicely detailed 4K footage of back yard birds. But a 15fps cap on 4K video, an ultra slow-motion mode that doesn’t appear to work properly, a cluttered app and AI-assisted species ID locked behind a subscription mean it falls slightly short of justifying its premium price.

Reasons to buy

  • +Detailed 4K images with the right settings
  • +Sturdy, rattle-free build and easy installation
  • +Easily removable dual-chamber hopper
  • +Solar roof keeps the battery topped up

Reasons to avoid

  • --Best software features require a subscription
  • -4K video capped at 15fps; 120fps mode doesn’t play back smoothly
  • -Birds sometimes come closer than the minimum focus distance
  • -Cluttered, confusing app
