About three or four months into our tenancy, my aunt’s newborn started losing hair. We didn’t connect it to the house at first. You look for other explanations. But the red, irritated skin kept getting worse, and then the mould appeared. Not a small patch in the corner of a bathroom. It spread across the walls and the ceiling. The kind of damp that gets into everything.

We contacted the letting agent. Then again. Then again. Nothing happened. No inspection, no repair, no acknowledgement that a family was living in a property that was making a newborn sick. Just silence.

We made it to the end of the lease and moved out. And then, almost as a final insult, we nearly lost our deposit.

I am a software engineer now. And one of the things that has stayed with me from that experience is not just how badly the system...
