When tackling Sustainability, IT user organizations and tech vendors alike have to date primarily focused on measuring the carbon emissions of their IT estates, which includes data centers. But over the last year or so, this approach has begun to change. Anna Lungley, Head of Sustainability Consulting at IT and digital services company Fujitsu, explains:
Over the last year, the conversation has really started shifting. In the past, we've collectively suffered from carbon tunnel vision because, in the tech industry, measuring carbon emissions has had the biggest impact. So, when we looked at the impact of a particular product, we looked at its carbon lifecycle. It's only over the last year that we've thought about measuring the value chain and have become more aware of things like water and mineral use, and human rights in that context.
