‘The Shards’ Review: Ryan Murphy’s High School Drama Is a Hypnotic Homage to ’80s Serial Killers
The Shards, the newest horror-flavored series from Ryan Murphy and an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel of the same name, premieres Wednesday with its first two episodes dropping on FX and Hulu. The remaining episodes will be released in pairs each Wednesday until the finale on Sept. 10.
The program centers on a 17-year-old Bret, who, while writing his debut novel Less Than Zero (the book that catapulted Ellis to stardom), becomes entranced by a serial killer’s disturbing reign of terror over 1981 Los Angeles.
Sounds cool, right? As someone who obsessively ate up Ellis’ post Less Than Zero books, specifically American Psycho, this synopsis feels like a must-watch.
