Worldwide PC shipments fell a staggering 20% year-over-year during the third quarter of 2026, per the latest IDC analysis, meaning 15.8 million fewer PCs were shipped compared with the same period in 2025.

The findings broadly align with Omdia's findings, which revealed a 21% drop, while IDC's data even shows a worrying 9% quarter-on-quarter decrease.

While the figures have a small degree of variability, both agencies agree on one thing – the AI boom is responsible for the PC industry's problems, and it all comes down to the price of chips and other components.
