The macOS Version of Gemini Can Now Transcribe Speech Into Any Desktop App

Google is rolling out a new tool in the macOS Gemini app that can transcribe speech across other apps. To use it, you simply hover your cursor over the target window, hold the Fn key, and speak, and Gemini will insert the text into that window.

Like Google's dictation app for iOS, the feature reportedly cleans up filler words like "um" and "ah." You can also activate a screen-aware reasoning mode, giving Gemini access to on-screen content so it can summarize files, rewrite selected text, and more. With Apple's refreshed Siri still in beta and not expected to roll out until September, this could be the closest thing Mac users can currently get to a baked-in smart assistant.

English-speaking users can begin using the feature now, with more languages to come later. You can opt out at any time.
