Italian open source hardware specialist AAElectronics is hoping to help people free their smart homes from proprietary capture with the LocalDot, a replacement mainboard for Amazon's third-generation Echo Dot smart speakers that cuts the corporate connection and replaces it with Home Assistant integration instead.

"LocalDot is an open hardware replacement PCB that fits inside a third-generation Amazon Echo Dot," AAElectronics' Alessandro Alfonzetti explains of his creation. "It is a fully local alternative, but with the same case, same microphones, same speaker, same buttons and same LEDs you already own. Change the board, and a device that used to send everything it heard to remote servers becomes a voice assistant that only talks to your own network. Say goodbye to Alexa and hello to a privacy-preserving voice-activated node that works with Home Assistant to let you control other IoT [Internet of Things] devices in your house."
