The Heathkit H8 Is Back as a Palm-Sized DIY Replica
Building your own computer once meant something very different. Instead of ordering a few boards and plugging them together, you could buy a box full of components, pick up a soldering iron, and assemble the machine yourself. Heath Company helped popularize that experience with its famous Heathkits, including the H8 microcomputer introduced in 1977. Now, with the H8's 50th anniversary approaching, Lee Hart and members of the Society of Eight-Bit Heath Computerists have created a miniature version you can once again build yourself.
Called the H8 Mini, the project isn't an emulator running on a modern microcontroller. It's a functional recreation built with vintage-style components and through-hole construction, with no surface-mount parts hiding anywhere. The goal is to retain the character and capabilities of the original H8 while shrinking it down and making it affordable enough to introduce a new generation to kit building.
