The Gates Foundation will spend at least $1bn on AI access over the next two years
Bill Gates has committed the Gates Foundation to spending at least $1bn over the next two years on expanding access to AI, and paired the announcement with a blunt assessment of the people who are supposed to be regulating it.
“I don’t think any government is nearly as deep on this as they have to be,” he told Reuters in an interview published on Tuesday. “Governments are way behind on this one.”
The money goes to partners working in education, healthcare and agriculture, and to something less obvious: building the data foundations that would let large language models function across all languages rather than the handful they currently serve well.
That second item is the substantive one, and it is far harder than it sounds. English accounts for roughly 49 percent of web content.
