As an automated system grows more complex, so does the supervisory control structure around it. Higher complexity and more sophisticated control demand a corresponding rise in the quality of communication and cooperation between human and machine. The human's role shifts from controller to supervisor, and interacting with the system through one or several layers of computers on which the interface, the automation, and the decision-support functions are implemented.
