The digital glass ceiling (1/2) - why AI stands accused of actually amplifying workplace gender bias
To find a good example of where AI is both amplifying and accelerating existing trends, you need look no further than gender bias and discrimination, not least in a workplace context.
A report by UN [United Nations] Women revealed, for instance, that discriminatory algorithms are re-producing old gender stereotypes and re-inforcing inequalities. A study of 133 generative AI systems revealed consistent gender bias, with more than a quarter showing both gender and racial bias. One in five responses were sexist or misogynistic.
According to another study, when a recruitment panel was told AI had been used to generate resumes for both a male and female job candidate, they judged the female's CV much more harshly- even though the documents were identical. In fact, recruiters were twice as likely to raise doubts about the female's competence and ability to do the job as they were with her male colleague....
