The Cross-Category Practice of Industrial Designer Kyung-seo Yoo
Kyung-seo Yoo is an industrial designer who works across categories most people spend a career specializing in. She trained in industrial design at RISD, with a concentration in Computation, Technology, and Culture and cross-registration in Design Engineering at Brown, and now designs professionally while also developing her own projects independently, end to end, from first sketch to finished object. In the space of about a year, that independent work has produced a portable coffee press, a sculptural table lamp, and a slow-feeder dog bowl — three objects with no shared material, manufacturing process, or shelf in a store — and each has picked up its own national or international design award. Most product designers build a career by going deep in one category: the furniture person, the coffee-gear person, the pet-brand person. Yoo has spent the past year collecting recognition in none of those lanes exclusively.
