The BloomBeacon Uses Persistence-of-Vision to Produce On-Demand Floating Touchscreens
Researchers at the University of Chicago's AxLab have developed a touchscreen that "blooms" into existence in mid-air only when required, hiding away when not needed any more.
"Blooming [is] a concept that repurposes Persistence-of-Vision (POV) motion to deploy a large, touchable surface from a compact, relocatable device," the team, which includes project originator Willa Yang and is led by AxLab head Ken Nakagaki, explains of the idea behind BloomBeacon. "Using a soft, rotating line with arch-shaped electrodes, our system renders dynamic mid-air visuals while enabling direct touch input on the manifested surface."
