The 64-Pixel Display Powered Entirely by Air
Electronic displays are everywhere these days — hanging on walls, sitting on desks, riding in our pockets, and strapped to our wrists. Only a few main types — LED, LCD, and E Ink — are seen on a regular basis, so it’s easy to forget that there are other ways to represent digital information. The latest project from YouTuber Soiboi Soft demonstrates an alternative display technology that is powered by air pressure. This 64-pixel soft display stores images using vacuums, silicone membranes, and a complex network of 3D-printed channels.
The 8×8 display is powered by fluidic logic rather than the usual electrical signals. Atmospheric pressure represents a binary 0, while a vacuum represents a binary 1. Instead of transistors, the system uses tiny pneumatic valves inspired by microfluidics research. Applying vacuum to a control chamber pulls a thin silicone membrane downward, opening an internal passage that allows air to flow....
