That’s No Router! That’s a Clock!

It feels a little weird to admit, but I feel kind of nostalgic about the old Linksys WRT Wi-Fi routers. You know, those black and blue (or indigo?) internet boxes that were absolutely ubiquitous in the mid-to-late 2000s? You can run open-source firmware to make them far more versatile, so some people still use them. But they’re outdated and don’t offer much to the modern consumer, which means they now have “oh yeah, I remember those” status. Banking on that nostalgia, Glen Akins reproduced the classic Linksys WRT as a digital clock.

The actual clocky stuff was inspired by a design published by Lee Hutchinson on Ars Technica, built to never require time-setting. Hutchinson based that on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, which is complete overkill. It essentially just checks NTP (Network Time Protocol) over LAN—though Hutchinson did put a lot of extra effort into security, so...
