Telegram Warns of Emerging ‘Takedown Extortion’ Threat Targeting Online Communities

Following the brief removal of Telegram from the Apple App Store after an attacker allegedly planted illegal content in a public group, Telegram has shared details of what it describes as an emerging form of cyber-enabled abuse known as “takedown extortion.” The company said the incident underscores how malicious actors are increasingly attempting to exploit platform moderation systems to target legitimate online communities.

According to Telegram, the app was restored within hours after the illegal content was removed and the responsible account was banned. The company said the incident highlights the need for greater awareness of evolving tactics that seek to manipulate enforcement processes across digital platforms.
