Teaching College Physics with Micro:bits and 3D Prints

You can teach (or learn) physics with calculus using maker-level technologies like BBC micro:bits and 3D printing.

First year college physics typically involves an instructor at the front of the room with complicated demonstrations. An instructor might just write a lot of equations on the board, and no demonstrations at all. Many people can learn this way, but what if you learn better hands-on? Or, how can a home schooler learn physics at this level?

We decided to see what would happen if we tried to teach calculus-based first-semester mechanics entirely with maker-level materials, starting with an experiment first, and deconstructing the physics from it. We used BBC micro:bit processors and electronics in that ecosystem, 3D prints, and random weights, ball bearings and craft materials.
